Today is my 14th wedding anniversary. On Saturday night we celebrated. We went to dinner at Latil's Landing out at Houmas House Plantation. I've mentioned before that I used to be a tour guide there, but that's been almost 20 years ago (seriously??).
Being there brought back so many memories. It was my first time back since the new ownership. Oh my, had it ever changed! I've seen the images on the website, but to experience it in person was something different. It was quite impressive, especially having known the old Houmas House so well. I was surprised at how much of the history of the house I remembered. See that carriage way above? It separates the original house from the newer house. I used to do my homework there.
The place where we dined was the original structure built on the property in the 1700's. Back in my tour guide days we didn't bring tours through those rooms, but visitors were allowed to view them. They were my favorite, probably because they were so tiny and cozy. It was nice to see them revamped as dining rooms.
The food was divine, a total splurge. I had the stuffed lobster over a creole tomato risotto with crawfish tails. Yum.
After dinner we strolled the grounds and took a peek in the windows. The rooms are totally different now, but there are a few elements that I remembered.
I'd love to go back during the daytime to take a tour of the house. Yes, it is a bit over the top, all frou-froued up and flashy, but if you're ever in the area, I think it's definitely worth a visit. Our time spent there Saturday night sure made our anniversary celebration special.
